Robert Schumann – Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy | Piano Works

Schumann’s piano music requires both poetry and virtuosity. In this two-disc set mixing some of the composer’s best-loved works with some of his less well-known, German pianist Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy demonstrates he has some of the former and perhaps not enough of the latter. In tempestuous passages such as the central movements of “Carnaval” and the whole of the Presto passionato, Schmitt-Leonardy finds the music’s emotional heart. As for the music’s poetic heart, however, he is as often hit as miss. Some movements, like the Symphonic Etudes’ melancholy Con espressione, are lovely, but others, like the more mysterious of the Nachstücke, come off as prosaic. Schmitt-Leonardy’s tone is oddly light in weighty passages throughout and, though he musters impressive speed at times, one wishes he would dig into his sonorities with more authority. Brilliant’s digital sound is a bit dry, though still clear and vivid, but this playing is unlikely to impress Schumann’s admirers.
